John started boxing as a junior, following brothers Stuart and Donald into the ring under the tutelage of Graham Stevenson at Loudwater ABC, he would go on to reach the schoolboy quarter finals and represent the home counties team a number of times with the highlight being New York!
After his spell in the amateur ranks, John switched his interest into helping out other family members in Scott Russell and Dale Draper, learning under John they would both go on to be great amateurs. This is when High Wycombe ABC came knocking, John quickly built a team and began his coaching career with a number of exciting wins, eventually Ben Smith would stand out of all of John's fighters, going on to win just about every under 18 title out there and gaining his England vest.
John has also been coaching internationally as a cemented part of the current England team. If that wasn't enough, Smith, after falling out of love with East London and forming a strong bond with John, has now come back home. to undertake his next fights under John's training, now as a BBBOC pro coach.
